Pour se placer dans une logique de réconciliation avec l’Allemagne, le président Giscard d’Estaing supprime également la commémoration de la victoire alliée en 1945. C’est à la demande du président François Mitterrand que cette commémoration et ce jour férié seront rétablis, par la Loi du 23 septembre 1981.
